Friday Random 10: A Summer Wasting

I’d like to make a real post today but given the number of things I need to do (getting ready for a trip to Mexico on Sunday) I may not get around to it. In the meantime, here are the next ten songs to play on my iPod:

  1. Belle & Sebastian, “A Summer Wasting”

  2. The Reindeer Section, “Where I Fall”
  3. Yo La Tengo, “Sugarcube”
  4. Get Him Eat Him, “Separate States”
  5. Yo La Tengo, “Double Dare”
  6. Autechre, “Ipacial Section”
  7. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, “And I’m Aching”
  8. My Bloody Valentine, “Several Girls Galore”
  9. Sleater-Kinney, “Rollercoaster”
  10. Belle & Sebastian, “Act Of The Apostle II”

The best song in this set is definitely “Sugarcube”:
Try to be more assured, try to be more right there
Try to be less uptight, try to be more aware
Whatever you want from me, is what I want to do for you
Sweeter than a drop of blood from a sugarcube

Here are my ten songs (via iTunes):
    1. Delerium, “Fathoms”
    2. Abra Moore, “Four Leaf Clover”
    3. Tanita Tikaram, “Cathedral Song”
    4. David & David, “Welcome to the Boomtown”
    5. David Bowie, “Fashion”
    6. Enya, “Book of Days”
    7. Ultravox, “Reap the Wild Wind”
    8. Timbuk 3, “Hairstyles and Attitudes”
    9. Duran Duran, “The Reflex”
    10. Sting, “Love is the Seventh Wave”
It’s tough to decide my favorite song among these, but a couple of them have an interesting connection (assuming I’m remembering things correctly).

  2. Josh

1: “Oh! You Pretty Things!” – David Bowie
2: “Nightrain” – Guns ‘N Roses, Live Era
3: “Hysteria” – Muse Live End Session
4: “Friend of the Devil” – Lyle Lovett
5: “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down” – Nancy Sinatra
6: “Kiss Off (live)” – Violent Femmes
7: “Zeal Palace” – Yasunori Mitsuda, Chrono Trigger
    8: “Reality” – David Bowie
9: “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)” – Kenny Rogers
    10: “Killer Queen” – Queen
2 are from movies, 2 are David Bowie, 2 are from video games, and 3 are live. I’ll leave you all to decide which is the one left over.

Well, the Bowie songs and the live songs are both marked as such. “Zeal Palace” is from Chrono Trigger and “Killer Queen” appeared in Guitar Hero. “Bang Bang” appeared in Kill Bill, vol. 1 and “Just Dropped In” appeared in The Big Lebowski. That leaves Lyle Lovett, “Friend of the Devil” as the one left over.

I was thinking more about this: As far as I know none of the songs on my list were in a movie, but Yo La Tengo did appear as the Velvet Underground in I Shot Andy Warhol. And the Belle & Sebastian song “Seymour Stein” (from the same album as “A Summer Wasting”) was in High Fidelity.
Apparently Weezer will play the Velvet Underground in an upcoming film.
