Project 365 comments thread (Summer)

sutro tower above fog, originally uploaded by arcanegazebo.

I looked up the tower in Wikipedia and found that it’s considered ugly enough to airbrush out of travel brochures. For shame! I like it—it’s like a red claw reaching into the sky. How is that not awesome? Wikipedia goes on to quote Herb Caen on the tower: “I keep waiting for it to stalk down the hill and attack the Golden Gate Bridge.” I guess that’s supposed to be a criticism but I would say that as an endorsement.

Anyway, here’s a new thread for Project 365 comments. Will it presage a return to regular blogging? Only time will tell.

    Dude, that’s gorgeous.
Fwiw, I’ve never thought ill of it — it just belongs. Probably because it was there before I developed my shameful excuse for a sense of aesthetics.
Never thought of it as a claw before, but now, as far as I’m concerned, it’s the arm of the Bay Areas gigantic robotic defender (courtesy of Japan), protruding from its secret underground lair. Airbrushing it out of photos is really a poorly-organized government cover up.

Yes, pretty tree. I guess the fact that I used to walk on the west side of the street (BART! BMUG! Cafe Firenze!) made it more apparent.
I’ve eaten there all of once. They’ve got a nice patio out back, but the bathrooms are cramped (and inadequate when busy).

“A place for everything, and everything in it’s place!”
Your challenge: Identify the source of the above quote without googling, etc.

    My precioussssssss….
So, have you named your new baby?
Mine is called Vecna, but that was primarily because my external harddrive was already named Phylactery (for obvious reasons). If I ever buy a mouse, it will be the “Mouse of Vecna”.

I named it Valkyrie after the class I’m currently playing in nethack. (My last two laptops were named after Valkyrie Profile characters, so it’s doubly appropriate.) This was originally intended to be a placeholder but I may keep it.

Ha, I turned in a legendarily bad performance in that game, managing to acquire not a single wedge. That might have been a good thing, since I had to drive home.
I blame my repeated attempts to obtain the green wedge, despite that being my worst category.

I like the Campanile pictures. Most of them have been unique enough to be interesting, though I imagine there’s no shortage of said pictures around Berkeley.
Also, reminds me of the old BMUG newsletters — I think every one had a new picture of the Campanile on it, sometimes with cutesy photoshopping, before that was even a verb!

You should start with the most important section (or at least the one that will get read the most): the acknowledgements. I made that part of my thesis especially snarky. :) (Actually, I guess the “Version 2″ [or did I write “Version 2.0″…? I forget.] I put in the title in the copy I gave to my program might technically be snarkier, but the submitted version’s title omits that.)

Oops, sorry for leaving one of those up the entire week. My plan was to let the summer thread last until the autumnal equinox, which is this Sunday, so I’ll probably stick to that. Meanwhile I’ve banned key phrases from the repeat spammers but I get new ones every day…
